Dear Chestnut Hill Community School Parents/Guardians,
Starting in April, we will begin the process of student placement for the 2020-2021 school year. The placement of students in classrooms is a very complex process. Below are some of the factors that we take into consideration:
* Teacher input * Parent input * Class size *New students * Social aspects
* Identified special needs * Accommodations * Academic needs * Behavioral needs
You are welcome to provide input in writing if there are significant factors you’d like to communicate to us. Please note, this opportunity is not intended for requesting specific teachers or curriculum models. Providing input is optional and is not a requirement for placement to occur. If you would like to provide input, please do so in writing via email. If you do not have access to email, please submit a letter via the CHCS main office.
In 2020-21, Ms. McConnell will be the school counselor for 5th-grade students, and Mr. Moyer-Wilkes will be the counselor for the 6th-grade. If you wish to provide information you feel is pertinent to your child’s placement, please email Ms. McConnell at [email protected] or Mr. Moyer-Wilkes at [email protected] by April 6, 2020. Every concern will be seriously considered; however, due to the complexity of the process, it may not be possible to honor all requests. Please remember, the final placement decisions rest with the placement team and are made with the best interest of each child in mind.
Placement notification letters will be mailed during the summer for all grades. After placements are made, we will be putting a hold on any changes until October 2020. This gives the staff, teachers, and students a chance to settle in, develop relationships, and establish routines before determining if any placement changes should be considered.
Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we go through this process. Please know that all of us here at CHCS are ready to work with you and your child to ensure that they will have a successful school year.
Sincerely,
The CHCS Placement Team

Transitions Between Grades & Buildings
Every grade level is a little different, and every student will go through a process of preparing to transition up to the next grade level. @ of the most difficult transitions are from 3rd to 4th grade and 6th to 7th grade. One of the biggest reasons these are more difficult is because student must transition to a new school building. (3rd graders move up to CHCS for 4th grade, and 6th graders move up to JBMS for 7th grade.) To help ease these transitions, special events and preparatory activities have become a big part of the move-up celebration each year.
3rd grade Step-Up Day to CHCS:
Every year sometime in June, all the 3rd grade students take a walking field trip to CHCS to tour the building, meet some of the faculty members, staff, the school counselor and administrators. They have an opportunity to ask questions, learn more about the building, visit specific areas and classrooms, and learn all about life as a 4th grader. This field trip is free of cost and only takes about an hour. *Any students who may be feeling especially anxious about this transition to CHCS or who may be going to a self-contained specialized classroom may have been on an additional small group tour. If desired, parents can make arrangements with the school counselors for an additional tour the week before the start of school.
6th grade Step-Up Day to JBMS:
Each year sometime in June, the 6th grade students traveled to Jabish Brook Middle School to see the building and the classrooms, participate in 7th and 8th grade lessons, and meet administrators, staff, and faculty. They also had a chance to ask questions, and hear more about 7th grade and life at JBMS. *Students are typically encouraged to make arrangements to come tour the school again the week before the start of school.
